First of, always keep in mind that keyword intelligence tools are useful as long as you are able to do the analytical thinking intelligently to make necessary comparisons and adjustments with them. Otherwise those tools quickly turn out as money machines for Google Adwords while emptying your pockets.

KeywordSpy” is one of the competitive intelligence tools to help us extract competitive keywords. If we consider “ebay.com” as the main site that you are going to promote, then yo just need to type ebay.com domain name into the search box and choose which geographical destination you are going to run your campaigns. If its US , then choose “Unites States”

    search_box_ebay_1

    Keywordspy returns by:

    • A graphical presentation of daily Ad Budget

    search_result_statistics_2

    • A snap shot of the site’s appearance
    • Total number of paid keywords 1,135,729
    • Total number of organic keywords 4,366

    • Daily Ad Budget: $120,048
    • Total Clicks/Day: 291,905
    • Paid Competitors: 24
    • Average Ad Position: 6.07
    • Average Cost/Click: $0.41

    • Organic listing variations.

    organic_listing_variations_7

So far we got a very detailed image for ebay.com and 1,135,729 keywords which are extremely large and hard to deal with. Of course for so many campaigns that you are going to handle, generally you will have ended up 1000-3000 keywords. It is less than 1,135,729 but still large enough to find good converting keywords.

One thing you must be aware is that the keywords extracted by Keywordspy were collected at an unspecified time. This means that the data could be gathered yesterday or a month ago. Unfortunately this situation is casting doubt on the accuracy and relevancy of data. Obviously, I cannot say that the data is completely useless. Instead I am trying to warn you about to check on every keyword that you would like to use in your campaigns. make wise decisions and don’t go after every keyword of the search results by “KeywordSpy” or any other keyword intelligence tool.

Keep in mind that, as time passes the conversion rate of any keyword can drop down, the seasonal purchasing trend for any product can come to an end or simply competition makes the bid price too high that bidding on that keyword just becomes infeasible.

Let me give you a few examples: if you make a search with the keyword “xbox” on Google you will find that there is no ebay.com sponsored links.

    xbox_no_result_yeni

Whereas keywordspy feed us that ebay.com is at the top position at the Google sponsored links . Unfortunately this information is not accurate anymore. Maybe 15 days ago but who knows?

    xbox_keyword_spy_more_13_yeni

Similarly “dance dance revolution” phrase turns out with no sponsored links from ebay.com out of countless competitors but Keywordspy shows us that ebay.com is at the 7th place with 10 other competitors which is not accurate again.

    dancedance_revolution_no_result_10_yeni_21

    dance_dance_revolution_keyword_spy_14_yeni2

If we check ebay.com keyword report at the “Time Machine” we will get a keyword trend graphic displaying that ebay.com keywords have been decreasing since November. In April the keyword volume has reached to its top by 2,679,007 than the sharp decline in keyword volume signs a very dramatic shift.

KeywordSpy provides a great advantage in exporting keyword data into Excel Spreadsheets. I will discuss this issue in another blog post.

We have to take all the following info as parameters for our campaigns
    1. Not every keyword found on Keywordspy is accurate

    2. Ebay.com competitive keywords are changing very dynamically and dramatically

    3. We have to divide our campaigns in different niche areas and check every outcome by Google Adwords to see their latest position.

    4. We have to part keywords into different themes and work for optimization of each group separately.

Good Luck and hard work for all of you!

Performance Marketing is all about relevancy. Relevancy must be all around us: Keywords, content, demographics and locations are all that matters to achieve success for performance marketing campaigns.

“Google Insights for Search” is hopefully become one of the tools which will enable us to qualify for relevancy in our Search Marketing adventures. I must call each person’s search marketing initiative as Adventure since it is unique to that particular time, place and circumstances. Like the dynamism in Google’s search marketing algorithm, relevancy is also a variable parameter in search marketing. We have to test every outcome and never base any assumptions on any accuracy of data in the long run.

With that in mind let’s take a look at what we can do with “Google Insights Tool for Search”.First of, we have to recall the number one rule for Search Engine Marketing “Split and Track”. Second “Testing Different Combinations for Creative’s, Keywords, Locations”
Now we can proceed to the third step with those 2 principals are already set in our minds.
Let’s describe a case together: I would like to do a PPC campaign for “Blackberry” and I need to find out which keywords and locations to bid on.
The good thing about this tool is the ability to make queries with multiple variables at the same time. With my keyword “Blackberry”, I have chosen Web Search, United States with all sub regions and metros, last 12 months and Telecommunications from the filter section.

    web_search_trends_monthly_blackberry

    web_search_trends_monthly_parametres

Blackberry query ended up with New York State as the highest volume of search and Massachusetts’s as the lowest volume. Please be careful that Google Insights does not provide absolute numbers instead works on relative values. Plus “The Regional Interest” states are changing everyday.

The Volume list will go on for April 24th, 2009

    newyork_city_search_volume_metros

Interest overtime chart is revealing the search trends over 12 months period of time and displaying the highest volume for this keyword in November.

    web_search_trends_monthly

“Search terms related to Blackberry” is a list of other keywords which has relevancy to the topic of Blackberry such us storm blackberry , blackberry bold, Verizon blackberry, verizon, blackberry pearl, blackberry phone, blackberry software.
Also we have another valuable info about the Blackberry keyword which is equipping us with related keywords’ trend analysis. As seen below blackberry 8900 has the highest increasing volume of search.

    top_searches_blackberry

    rising_searches_blackberry1

We are continuing over the forensic analysis of our keyword Blackberry. Since we have found that New York State has the highest volume of search, the smart way is to trace which metros are performing well for the “Blackberry” keyword.

In order to do it, I will go to Filter section and select New York at Sub regions and click to find out the highest volume searching cities in the New York State. My list is ended up with New York City as the top city and continues with , Utica-Rome, Syracuse, Albany-Schenectady-Troy, Rochester, Buffalo, Binghamton and Burlington, Elmira and Watertown. Now I will be more confident with running my ads in New York State but only in the 8 key metro areas of clear investigation by disregarding other cities.

    newyork_sub_metros_city_names

Therefore, it is much easier to target displaying my ads in Google Adwords. I am not blind anymore. All this analysis took me time but saves me a lot of money while I am targeting the derivations of Blackberry keyword which will increase my conversion rates and overall performance.

You can continue to this process for the first 5 states depending on your prospect perceptions.

When you try another mobile phone such as “Iphone” you will be surprised to see that the highest search volume for “Iphone” is in District of Columbia, then there comes New York State. If you are a local business trying to sell items to your area this is also a great way to target your prospective audience.

    balckberry_versus_iphone_states_destination3

Our hypothetical scenario helps us to conclude that:

    1. Split your target category into subcategories or brands (Mobile phones stands for the main category. Iphone and Blackberry are sub categories. For example, with Blackberry you can also divide it into Blackberry storm or blackberry pearl.)

    2. Find and split the areas that your ads will appear. Although both Iphone and Blackberry are provided by the same retailer (merchant), you must run your ads in different states or even different metro areas according to your findings after making your keyword forensic analysis.

    3. Check the keyword search volume and trends to be able to make a better estimation for your future revenue expectations.( You can use Google Keyword Tool to find the search volume numbers)

Developing converting keywords is one of the hot topics in affiliate marketing. However, creating “Converting Typo Keywords” is another issue which cannot be ignored, instead has to be designed carefully.

So far, there are tons of tools for producing typo keywords. For any generic keyword term, typo tools can provide almost 233 different typo possibilities. If you are running a 500 keyword set in one campaign, then you will end up 116,500 typo keywords which is hard to manage.

The question is how to find the converting ones? Let’s take a look at the methodology that I would like to follow:

The Typo Generator Tool will help you a lot.

    1. But first of all, decide on which keywords’ typo set will be created for your campaign and then copy and paste one of them in one of the text editor programs such as Ultra Edit or alike.
    2. You should copy the keyword into The Typo Generator Tool and then select all the options available on this screen.

    typo-1
    3. Now you get almost 233 keywords.

    4. Now it is time to find the keywords that are generating traffic. Assuming that you have already got an Adwords account, copy and paste 233 typo keywords into Traffic Estimator (Adwords / Tools / Traffic Estimator) in Adwords.

    typo-2

    typo-3

    5. Choose Maximum CPC value as $1 and $50 for your daily budget.

    6. Select English as a language and all the countries speaking in English.

    typo-4

    7. Now hit on “Continue” button and wait for a while to check out the results which will be amazing. Sort the results by “Search Volume”.

In our example we have gone after the keyword ” baby stroller”. Out of 233 typo keywords for “baby stroller” Google Traffic Estimator calculated that only 4 of them are collecting traffic. Google Traffic Estimator also gives us approximate bid prices and daily click values. Isn’t that amazing to save time and money?

    typo-52

Hope that you will find good converting Typos!
